Thank you for contacting me regarding fuel duty and the Budget.
As you will have read, this was frozen once again, as it has since the Conservatives entered government in 2010. However, your voice of support certainly helped my lobbying of Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The way Budgets and spending works, including tax foregone, does come at a cost against formal policy. While I would like to see this policy changed permanently, I understand why the Chancellor considers he has to make this decision on an annual basis.
On fuel prices more broadly, I know that our Energy Cabinet Minister Claire Coutinho has challenged petrol station bosses to pass on any savings at the pump and to be transparent with pricing. The Competition and Markets Authority, an economic regulator, is carefully monitoring and will act if needed.
